Overview
Albarella Golf Club, also known as Albarella Golf Links, is an 18-hole, par-72 course on the island of Albarella, on the coast of the Po Delta near Venice. John Harris designed it to capture the feel of a Scottish seaside links, and the club grew up alongside the course when it was built by the sea in 1972. Wildlife is part of the experience: fallow deer and pheasants wander freely across the fairways and greens.
Because it sits on sandy, free-draining ground, the course stays playable all year. The practice facilities are a strong point, with one of the widest grass-teed driving ranges in Italy, three separate greens for short-game work, and an indoor area used for group lessons. The club runs a golf school and holds handicap exams for newcomers who want to qualify for an official handicap, and the course is also one of a select group where FootGolf is played, in partnership with FootGolf Padova.
Albarella belongs to the Playgolf 54 group, alongside the Montecchia, Galzignano and Frassanelle clubs in the Veneto. The Italian Golf Federation has awarded it its "Impegnati nel Verde" (committed to green) label for its work on environmental sustainability.
Golfers can stay right on the course at the four-star Golf Hotel, whose rooms look straight out over the fairways. It offers bed and breakfast or half board, a bicycle for every guest, and discounted green fees. Its Bistrò La 18a Buca serves traditional lunches and fish-based dinners from a panoramic terrace overlooking the course.

The course is built on sand and drains well, so the club says it can be played 365 days a year, and the practice range stays open through the winter.
Albarella is an island in the Po Delta Park, in the municipality of Rosolina (province of Rovigo), linked to the mainland by an embankment road and a bridge. It lies between Chioggia, about 30 km away, and Comacchio, about 45 km away, with Venice within reach for a day trip.
Cars are kept to a minimum on the island: access is through a controlled entrance, and guests are encouraged to get around by bicycle or electric golf car rather than by car.
History & highlights
Golf on Albarella began in 1972, when the seaside course was built and the club was founded at the same time. The island itself covers 528 hectares of Mediterranean scrub and woodland, with around 2 million trees of 150 species; it takes its name from the white poplar, Populus alba.
