Overview

Campo de Golf de Meis sits on the slopes of Monte Castrove in the Pontevedra province of Galicia, about 10 minutes from the provincial capital. It opened on 17 May 2000 to a design by Spanish architect Antonio Grande and has 18 championship holes.

The course is threaded through a forest of Galician pine, with generous fairways, doglegs, lakes and natural hazards. Its hillside setting gives it a peaceful mountain feel and wide views over two of the Rías Baixas, the Ría de Arousa and the Ría de Pontevedra.

From the White tees it measures 6,263 metres to a par of 72, with a course rating of 73.4 and slope of 132. The Yellow tees play 6,086 metres, and the Blue and Red tees are shorter but carry higher ratings, which the course says shows a balanced test for golfers of every level.

Practice facilities include a range with 16 bays, target greens and baskets at 50, 100 and 150 metres and a ball machine, plus a putting green and a separate chipping green with a bunker. Two teaching professionals give individual and group lessons, with junior courses during the year. There is also a café-restaurant, a golf shop and buggy and trolley hire.

History & highlights

The course belongs to the Fundación Monte Castrove, a Galician public-interest foundation. After a period of 10 years in which the Royal Spanish Golf Federation ran it, the foundation took back management on 1 October 2013. Its board brings together the councils of Meis, Meaño, Ribadumia, Vilanova de Arousa, Vilagarcía de Arousa, Barro, Cambados and Sanxenxo along with the Chan do Fento golf club, and is chaired by the Meis council.

Meis is a regular venue for Galician competitions, including events of the Galician Golf Federation’s senior circuit. The course record from the yellow tees is 63, and several players, including Diego Torné Pájaro, have shot 65 from the whites.

Pine-forest fairways

Holes run through mature Galician pine, so accuracy off the tee counts as much as length, especially on the doglegs.

Views over the rías

From the higher ground there are views across the Ría de Arousa and the Ría de Pontevedra, one of the best outlooks on any course in Galicia.

Water and natural hazards

Lakes and natural obstacles come into play across the layout, rewarding a careful game plan over all-out attack.
