Overview

Doha Golf Club, on the West Bay Lagoon in Doha, sits at the heart of golf in Qatar. It is a 27-hole desert course venue designed by Peter Harradine, with an 18-hole Championship Course and a 9-hole floodlit Academy Course, and it calls itself a green oasis surrounded by city views.

The Championship Course is home to the DP World Tour’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and is known as one of the longest yet best-liked par-72 courses on that tour. It is a stern test from the back tees, where the Gold tees carry a course rating of 76.8 and a slope of 147, but four further sets of tees make it manageable for everyday golfers. It was designed with two starting and two finishing holes, so play can begin on the 1st or 10th, and both the 9th and 18th finish at the clubhouse.

The layout features 8 lakes and thousands of trees and shrubs, some native and some brought in from other desert regions such as Arizona. The Academy Course has wider fairways, shorter holes and fewer hazards, and because it is floodlit you can play well into the evening every day of the week.

The Arabian-style clubhouse has a sociable atmosphere, with food and drink run by the Mayfair Hospitality Group and a recently refurbished ground floor, The Club House & Terrace, with a new Grand Bar. There is a full-length driving range, a well-stocked pro shop open from 6 am to 9 pm with custom fitting and repairs, and the Qatar Golf Academy, run by PGA professionals, which offers lessons, junior coaching and popular ladies’ mornings.

Good to know

Visitors

Non-members can book tee times on both the Championship and Academy courses through the club’s online visitor booking. Green fees include a shared golf cart.

Booking

Online bookings are paid in full when you book. There are no refunds for no-shows, but bookings can be moved to another date or passed to a friend or family member. Official page ↗

Best time to visit

The wind tends to pick up in the afternoon, so morning tee times usually bring easier conditions. In summer the club runs a Twilight Package from 2 pm.

Walkability

Rounds are played with a shared cart, which is included in all green fees. The driving range dispenses balls from 06:00 to 20:30.

History & highlights

Grass golf in Qatar effectively began here. Construction photos on the club’s site date from 1995, the Qatar Open moved to the new all-grass championship course in 1997, and in 1998 the course hosted the first Commercial Bank Qatar Masters on the European Tour, won by Scotland’s Andrew Coltart. The tournament has drawn star fields to Doha ever since.

The club also stages the Qatar Open, the Qatar Seniors Open, the Ladies Doha Desert Classic and an Asian Tour International Series event as well as club open competitions.

Two loops from the clubhouse

With the 9th and 18th both returning to the clubhouse and starts possible on the 1st or 10th, the Championship Course is easy to split or to play as a full round.

Eight lakes

Water comes into play across the Championship Course, including a lake on the 17th that you look across from the 18th tees.

Floodlit Academy nine

The 9-hole Academy Course is lit for evening play, ideal for a quick round after work.

Tips for first-timers
