Overview
Las Vegas National Golf Club, known locally as "The National", is a classic, tree-lined 18-hole championship course a short drive from the Strip. Bert Stamps designed it, and it opened in October 1961 as the Stardust Country Club. Today it is a public course that welcomes golfers of every level and prides itself on service and a comfortable pace of play.
The par-71 layout has an oasis feel, with thousands of trees, including tall palms, lining the fairways, so placing the ball matters more than raw distance. Bunkers flank the greens, and two lakes affect play on four holes. There are five par 3s that make a stern test and four mid-length par 5s that give a real chance at par or birdie.
The clubhouse is home to the Rat Pack Bar & Grill, which serves breakfast and lunch every day with views over the course, and doubles as the home of the Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame exhibit. The golf shop stocks apparel from brands such as FootJoy, Nike and Travis Mathew, with TaylorMade and Callaway equipment, and TaylorMade and Callaway rental clubs are available. Lessons, group outings and catered events can also be arranged.

History & highlights
The National hosted its first pro event, the LPGA Championship, right after it opened in 1961, and LPGA events continued until 1966, with winners including Mickey Wright and Sandra Haynie. The PGA Tour arrived in 1967 with the Tournament of Champions, followed by the Sahara Invitational from 1969 to 1976, and from 1993 the course was one of the venues of the Las Vegas Invitational. Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Davis Love III and Jim Furyk are among the PGA winners. In 1996 Tiger Woods won the Las Vegas Invitational for his first PGA Tour victory; his 70 here was his highest round of the week.
Arnold Palmer set the course record of 63 during the 1967 Tournament of Champions. It stood for 24 years until Tom Kite shot 62 in 1991, a mark David Graham shares. In the 1960s the Rat Pack were regulars, and the course appeared in the film "Casino". The club has changed hands and names several times: Sahara-Nevada Country Club from 1969, Sahara Country Club from 1982, Las Vegas Hilton Country Club from 1994, and Las Vegas National since 1998.
- LPGA Championship, 1961
- PGA Tour Tournament of Champions, from 1967
- Sahara Invitational, 1969 – 1976
- Las Vegas Invitational rotation, 1993 – 1996 (Tiger Woods' first PGA Tour win in 1996)
Tips for first-timers
- Book an afternoon tee time if you want the lowest rate.
- Favour position over power: the trees are thick and punish wayward drives.
- Plan practice around Wednesdays, when the range closes at noon.
- Leave time after your round for the Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame exhibit in the Bar & Grill.
- Look out for the house from "Casino", left of the 1st tee between the 1st and 18th fairways.
