Overview
Oro Valley Country Club sits in the shadow of Pusch Ridge, part of the Santa Catalina Mountains, just northwest of Tucson. It is a private club with an 18-hole championship course, a campus-style clubhouse, a fitness centre, pickleball, a full-service golf shop and a busy social calendar. A renovation in 2023 brought improved greens, bunkers and practice areas.
Robert Bruce Harris designed the original course, and Keith Foster of the Arthur Hill Company reworked the whole layout in 1987. The par-72 course measures 7,025 yards from the Black tees, with Blue, White, Gold and Orange tees bringing it down to 5,025 yards. Doglegs, out-of-bounds lines and elevated, two-tier greens are recurring themes, so the round rewards an accurate drive and careful approach play more than sheer length.
The course is also a haven for wildlife. During the Tucson Christmas Bird Count, run with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, more than 30 bird species were recorded on the property, from desert natives such as Gambel's Quail and Gila Woodpeckers to Great Egrets and winter visitors like the American Wigeon.
Off the course, the focus of the clubhouse is Landon's Grill and Whiskey Tree Bar, a relaxed room for drinks after golf or a family dinner. Junior coaching (Crush It!, for ages 4-16) and the Game On programme for adult beginners are both run at the club.

Facilities
Good to know
Oro Valley Country Club is a private Invited club, so golf is for members and their guests. Non-members can still book weddings, golf outings and other events, and the membership team offers tours.
The course and practice facilities close each autumn for overseeding; in 2026 the closure ran from Monday, September 28 to October 23. Over the winter the Bermuda fairways are overseeded, and the greens are TifEagle.
The club describes its layout as a traditional, walkable course, with views of Pusch Ridge throughout.
The club is at 300 W Greenock Dr in Oro Valley, northwest of Tucson, below the Pusch Ridge section of the Santa Catalina Mountains. El Conquistador, Pusch Ridge Golf Course and the Cañada course are all within about 2 km.
History & highlights
In the early 1950's, Lou Landon saw that the northern part of Pima County needed another golf course: there were just three courses for around 250,000 people. Robert Bruce Harris was hired to design it, and the construction contract, signed on July 28, 1958, was delivered on schedule by December 28, 1958. Members bought the club from Oro Valley Inc. on February 15, 1961 for $1,600,000, a deal that included the course, clubhouse, pro shop, pool and 235 home sites. The 1987 redesign added the lake beside the 18th fairway, and the current 28,000 sq ft clubhouse, three buildings around the 9th green, followed in 2006. The bar is named after the Whiskey Tree, a mesquite on the 15th hole where early members could stop for a drink provided by a neighbour.
A 434-yard dogleg left from the Black tees and the men's stroke index 1, with a steep, mounded bunker at the corner.
A par 3 of up to 235 yards, usually played into the western breeze, with bunkers and out-of-bounds left.
A par 3 that has to carry all the way to a two-level green, with bunkers left and a drop-off right.
A 449-yard par 4 from the Blacks with a 1 ½-acre lake running up the left side to the green and a waterfall under Pusch Ridge behind it.
Tips for first-timers
- On the 5th, a drive over the dogleg corner leaves just a pitch to the raised, two-level green.
- Take an extra club on the 8th, which plays into the prevailing western breeze.
- Favour the right side on the 18th to stay away from the lake, but watch out for the bunker there.
- Check the club's hours before you visit: the course closes for overseeding every autumn.
