Overview

El Gouna Golf Club is the original championship course of El Gouna, the lagoon resort town on Egypt's Red Sea coast north of Hurghada. Gene Bates and Fred Couples designed the 18-hole, par-72 layout, which measures 6,269 metres from the championship tees. Its setting is the selling point: panoramic views of the Red Sea mountains, turquoise waterways and sunshine nearly every day of the year.

Several tee positions on every hole make it playable for all abilities: 4,848 metres from the forward ladies' tees and 5,814 metres from the standard men's tees. Bunkers, waterways and native desert areas give each hole its strategy, and the back nine is the longer half. It includes the 524-metre 13th and the 513-metre 17th, while the 5th, at 153 metres, is the shortest hole.

Practice takes place at the town's Aqua Driving Range, with a pitching and chipping area and two putting greens that hold up to 30 players. Multilingual golf professionals teach lessons and run beginner introductions on set afternoons. The pro shop stocks branded clothing, balls, gloves and hats, and several hotels lie a short walk away along the lagoon.

El Gouna is a two-course destination. Multi-round packages can be shared with the nearby Ancient Sands Golf Club, about 3.5 km away, so many visitors play both.
