The World Handicap System (WHS), run by the R&A and the USGA, is used in most golfing countries. Each round you play gives a score differential:
Score differential = (113 ÷ Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating − PCC)
PCC is the playing conditions calculation, a small daily adjustment (usually 0) that your golf authority applies when scoring is unusually hard or easy. Your Handicap Index is the average of your best 8 differentials from your most recent 20. With fewer than 20 scores, fewer differentials are used, and with 3 to 6 scores a small adjustment is made. This calculator follows that table.
Your Course Handicap is the number of strokes you get on a particular set of tees: Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par). For competitions, a handicap allowance (95% is the usual default for individual stroke play) gives your Playing Handicap.
This is an unofficial calculator for guidance. Your official Handicap Index comes from your national golf association’s handicap service.
