Overview

Arizona Country Club is a family-focused private club tucked into the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix, a short way south of Camelback Mountain. It describes itself as an old-style country club with a modern way of living, and says it has repeatedly been ranked the top family club in the state.

The golf course is a parkland-style championship layout, par 72, with six sets of tees. From the Blue tees it stretches to 6,720 yards with a rating of 71.9 and a slope of 130, while the Red tees come in at 5,398 yards, so the same course works for strong players and for families just starting out. The longest hole is the 10th, a 593-yard par 5 from the back that is also the hardest hole on the card for both men and women.

Away from the course the club is built for whole families. The 88,700 square foot clubhouse houses the Outpost Bar & Grill, a Men's Grill and Ladies Lounge, and The Deck for casual meals by the pool. There is a full-service spa and salon, a fitness center with personal trainers and a long list of free classes, seven lighted tennis courts and four lighted pickleball courts, and an aquatic center with an Olympic-sized heated pool, cabanas, a zero-entry pool for children and an adults-only area. Kidzona offers hourly childcare and a games room for older kids.

Good to know

Visitors

Arizona Country Club is private and owned by its members, and membership is by invitation only. There is no public tee sheet, so a round here means playing as the guest of a member.

Getting there

The club sits in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix, just south of Camelback Mountain. The Phoenician resort course is about 2.5 km away and Papago Golf Club about 3 km.

History & highlights

The club's story begins in 1909 with the Ingleside Golf Resort, which the club says was the first winter resort built in Phoenix. Its early course had just six holes with oiled sand greens and lay north of Indian School Road and the Arizona Canal.

In the late 1920s Ralph Murphy moved the resort across the canal and built a new 18-hole course on common Bermuda grass. That course was redesigned and reshaped in 1946, the year Arizona Country Club was incorporated, and it soon became one of the leading private clubs in the Valley.

From 1955 to 1973 the club hosted the Phoenix Open. Arnold Palmer won the event here in 1961 and 1963, and Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player are among the other greats who played the course. Many of today's members are the children and grandchildren of the founders.

Tour history

For almost two decades the Phoenix Open was played here, and Arnold Palmer won two of his titles on these fairways.

The 10th hole

A 593-yard par 5 from the Blue tees and the number one handicap hole for both men and women, it opens the back nine with a real test.

Family facilities

Spa, fitness, tennis and pickleball, an aquatic center and supervised childcare make the club much more than a golf course.
