Overview

Fågelbro Golf & Country Club lies on Värmdö in the Stockholm archipelago, on historic estate land whose name appears in Stockholm city records as early as 1491. Its 18-hole course, designed by Björn Eriksson and opened in 1991, is a forest and parkland layout of par 71. It is not long, but the club says that when the wind blows it challenges even the best players.

Between 2023 and 2025 architect Johan Benestam led a major renovation, carried out by the Scottish firm Nelson & Vecchio. Every green and green surround was rebuilt with creeping bentgrass, all bunkers were modernised (some removed or moved), several tees were reshaped, and every hole gained a forward tee to make the course more accessible to average golfers while still testing low handicappers. All holes reopened on 14 June 2025. The course record is 67, shared by Wilhelm Schauman and Vendela From.

Beyond the hotel there is a 9-hole pay-and-play course, opened in 2001 and given a slope rating in 2025. The practice area has two rebuilt putting greens, a short-game area for chips, pitches and bunker shots, and a driving range with 15 mats, seven of them covered, plus Fågelbro Academy’s swing studio, where the club’s two coaches Marlene Hedblom and Toni Lundahl teach.

This is a true country club: members can also play tennis, padel and squash, use the gym and the heated outdoor pool, and join bridge, yoga and riding. Fågelbro Krog, set in an 18th-century wing of the old manor, and the Halfway House serve high-quality food and drink. The neighbouring Fågelbro Säteri hotel by the 16th hole has 72 rooms, a spa and golf packages.

History & highlights

In 1981 the estate, about 650 hectares, was bought by architect and developer Tomas Hagman, who enlisted H&M founder Erling Persson to help fund a golf and country club. The project survived the 1990 financial crisis with backing from Wasa Försäkring and others, and Craig Stadler opened the course in the summer of 1991. Fairways on the 10th and 16th were built across a marsh on a polystyrene base.

Fågelbro hosted the European Seniors Tour in 1997 and 1998, the Telia Tour in 2001 and the Swedish men’s championship in 2014. In 2013 Stefan Persson acquired the club company, and a non-profit members’ club was formed that leases the course. PGA Tour player Henrik Norlander and Ladies European Tour winner Camilla Lennarth both have links to the club.

Holes 10 and 16: built on a marsh

These fairways were laid over a bog on a polystyrene base during construction, and the club says an excavator still lies at the bottom of the marsh.

New greens and bunkers

Every green was rebuilt to modern standards and levelled so that water no longer sits on the surface and freezes in winter, and the bunkers got new bases and sand.

Hole 8

The hill in front of the green was blasted away during the renovation, changing how the approach plays.
