Overview

Haukadalsvollur is a nine-hole course in Haukadalur, right beside the Geysir hot spring area on Iceland's Golden Circle. It opened in July 2006 and was designed by Edwin Roald, who aimed to fit fairways and greens into the natural landscape without heavy earth-moving. The club says it sits about 100 metres from Strokkur, which erupts every 5 to 10 minutes.

Every hole is named after a hot spring in the valley, including Strokkur, Blesi, Fata, Konungshver, Litli-Geysir, Smidur and Stori-Geysir. The greens are sown with pure fescue, which the club says gives a smooth, fast roll in Icelandic conditions, and the club describes challenging shots over natural mounds and steaming geothermal ground.

The scorecard lists nine holes with a par of 36 (the club's headline text says par 37), with 3,200 metres from the white tees, 3,030 metres from the yellow tees and 2,575 metres from the red tees. Played twice as 18 holes, that is 6,400, 6,060 and 5,150 metres. The longest holes are the par-5 fourth, Konungshver, at 495 metres from the white tees, and the par-5 ninth, Stori-Geysir, at 510 metres.

Guests pay 7,000 kr. for 9 holes or 10,500 kr. for 18, Icelandic Golf Association members pay 4,200 kr. or 7,000 kr., and players aged 17 and under pay 2,100 kr. or 3,500 kr. Reception, cart and club hire, a cafe with light dishes and Icelandic beer, and accommodation at Hotel Geysir and Hotel Litli-Geysir are all in walking distance of the first tee.
