Overview
Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton Parish is the island’s flagship public course and, at 6,842 yards, the longest on the island. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed it in 1970, and it is owned and operated by the Government of Bermuda together with its sister course, Ocean View. It plays to par 71.
The layout rolls over hilly ground with the Atlantic in view on many holes and more water features than any other course in Bermuda. Expect doglegs, raised and heavily bunkered greens, and prevailing winds that change how holes play. The opening stretch is tough, with the 4th the stroke-index-one hole, and the finish is famous: the 15th runs along the ocean, and the 16th is a par 3 played across the water to a green on its own peninsula.
In 2008 the course had a $14.5 million renovation led by Roger Rulewich, a member of the original design team, ahead of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. Its greens and fairways have been named the best-conditioned on the island three years running.
Practice facilities are the best in Bermuda for a public visitor. The 300-yard range is the island’s only public day-and-night range, with 25 bays on grass or mats, target greens at 75, 100, 150 and 200 yards and ocean views; it stays open until 9 pm. There is also a putting area, a short-game zone near the 6th with three bunkers and three target greens, a well-stocked golf shop, locker rooms, a snack shop and the Bella Vista restaurant and bar.

Book online or by phone, well ahead in peak season. Cancel at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a charge. Rain checks or refunds for bad weather are at the course’s discretion. Check in at the golf shop, where you collect your scorecard or yardage book. Official page ↗
Proper golf attire at all times: collared shirts with golf shorts or slacks for men, and golf skirts, shorts or slacks for women. No jeans, swimwear or T-shirts.
Walking is allowed, but the course is hilly and many golfers choose a cart. Pull carts are available from the caddie shop.
History & highlights
Port Royal opened in 1970 and was rebuilt in 2008 for the 2009 and 2010 PGA Grand Slam of Golf. Since 2019 it has been a regular stop on the PGA TOUR as host of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, and in 2024 Golfweek/USA Today ranked it 28th in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America region.
A 235-yard par 3 from the back, played across the sea to a small, bunkered green high on its own peninsula. Four tee options make it playable for everyone, and a miss right is the safe side.
A 458-yard dogleg par 4 to a raised, three-section green ringed by deep bunkers. Aim for the corner but stay clear of the bunkers on the right.
A demanding 213-yard par 3 to a large green perched by the ocean; anything long can end up in the water.

- Take an extra club into the raised, three-tiered 18th green.
- Warm up at the range: it opens at sunrise and runs into the evening.
- Sunset golf is the cheapest way to play the full experience.
- Pack proper golf clothing; jeans and T-shirts are turned away.
- The golf shop goes cashless in December, so bring a card.
