Overview

Royal Aberdeen is one of the oldest golf clubs anywhere: it was founded in 1780 and calls itself the sixth oldest club in the world. Its home is Balgownie Links at Bridge of Don, on the North Sea coast just north of Aberdeen city centre, where the club has played since 1888.

Balgownie is a classic out-and-back links. The front nine runs out through a valley between high dunes close to the beach, and the back nine returns along a higher plateau that is flatter but full of blind tee shots, hidden hollows and tricky greens. The prevailing wind often comes from the southwest on the way home, so club selection changes from day to day.

From the Blue tees the championship course measures 6,918 yards to a par of 71, with a course rating of 74.8 and a slope of 144, which puts it among the tougher tests in Scotland. Shorter White, Yellow, Red and Green tees make it playable for a wider range of golfers. The club also runs a second 18-hole layout, the Silverburn course, which is much shorter at par 64.

Good to know

Visitors

Visitors are welcome to book the Balgownie Links. The club suggests it for golfers with a handicap of 24 or lower because of how demanding it is, though staff can suggest a mix of tees for higher handicaps.

Booking

Book direct with the club. Full payment is due within 30 days of booking. Cancelling more than 14 days ahead gives you a choice of rescheduling, a credit note, or a 75% refund; inside 14 days there is normally no refund. The current green fees are in the club’s visitor brochure, linked from its visitor page. Official page ↗

Dress code

Proper golf clothing and golf shoes on the course: collared or golf-design shirts tucked in, tailored trousers or shorts; no denim, trainers, cargo shorts or slogan clothing. The clubhouse is smart casual, but jacket and tie are required in the dining room, and in the Archie Simpson Lounge on Saturdays.

Walkability

Buggies are only available with a medical certificate, and they come with a caddie as the driver. Most visitors walk, with a trolley or a caddie, so plan for a full links walk out through the dunes and back.

History & highlights

The club began life as the Society of Golfers at Aberdeen, with members admitted by secret ballot; the original ballot box, marked 1780, is still kept in the clubhouse. In 1783 the members introduced a five-minute limit on searching for a lost ball, which the club describes as the first rule of its kind. The society became the Aberdeen Golf Club in 1815, and King Edward VII granted the Royal title in 1903.

For most of the 19th century members played on the Queen’s Links near the city. In 1888 they moved across the River Don to Balgownie. The course was first laid out by the Simpson brothers, Archie and Robert, of Carnoustie, and was later re-bunkered and lengthened by James Braid.

The 8th: signature par 3

A short hole ringed by nine bunkers. Depending on the wind it can need anything from a long iron to a wedge, and the only safe line is straight at the green.

The 3rd: longest par 3

An elevated tee and up to 248 yards from the championship tee. The club’s own advice is to use the slopes short and right of the green to feed the ball on.

The 4th: stroke index 1

The hardest hole on the card. A high tee exposes your drive to the wind, and the right side of the fairway gives the best angle into a long, narrow green.

Tips for first-timers

Map & location

The club is at Links Road in Bridge of Don, on the coast just north of Aberdeen. Murcar Links is about 2 km up the coast, so the two make an easy pairing for a golf trip.
