Overview

Sunday River Golf Club is the summer and fall golf course of the Sunday River resort in Newry, Maine. Robert Trent Jones Jr. carved the 18-hole course into the mountains of western Maine, and the club bills the scenery as hard to beat anywhere in New England.

This is a serious test from the back. The Black tees stretch to 7,051 yards with a course rating of 75.3 and a slope of 151. Most visitors will be happier on the Blue tees (6,447 yards, slope 139) or the White tees (5,741 yards, slope 128), and the Green tees at 4,906 yards make it manageable for newer players. All four sets play to par 72.

The club publishes its maintenance numbers too: greens run at around 10 feet on the stimpmeter, with fairways cut to half an inch and greens to an eighth of an inch. There is a practice range, and the Pro Shop in the Clubhouse stocks logowear and golf gear.

The Clubhouse restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with views over the course and the mountains. The menu leans on Maine produce, from lobster rolls and lobster BLTs to chowder and burgers made with Pineland Farms beef, and there is a happy hour on Monday to Wednesday evenings from 4 to 8PM.
